Description

The Cisco HWIC-8A/S-232 is a high-performance 8-port asynchronous/synchronous serial interface card designed for modular Cisco access routers. Built to support RS-232 signaling, this HWIC is ideal for applications needing multiple low-speed serial connections, such as legacy WAN access, console server setups, or out-of-band management. Each of the eight ports operates independently and can be configured for either asynchronous or synchronous communication, offering flexibility across various network environments. Its compact design fits seamlessly into compatible Cisco ISR routers, conserving space while expanding functionality.

This module supports speeds up to 128 Kbps per port in synchronous mode and up to 115.2 Kbps in asynchronous mode, with hardware flow control for reliable data transmission. It uses standard 68-pin VHDCI connectors, typically paired with breakout cables for individual serial connections. The HWIC-8A/S-232 is compatible with a range of Cisco Integrated Services Routers including the 1800, 2800, and 3800 series. Whether used for terminal server applications or connecting to legacy serial devices, it provides a stable and cost-effective solution for expanding serial connectivity.
